There are some themes in vintage pulp stories which would never fly today, and for good reason. In creating the characters for Airship Daedalus and the setting for their adventures, one of Todd Downing’s goals was to remove the more toxic elements of the genre (like casual racism and misogyny) and retain the fun and excitement that is the hallmark of the pulp movement.
So while most characters are based on pulp adventure tropes and archetypes, they are far from two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. The heroes do good despite the inherent difficulty, and even the most mustache-twisting evil nemesis has a complex psychology and motivations.
